History

Spennymoor Town (2005-present)

During the 2004-05 season, two of the county's clubs ran into difficulty, Evenwood Town completed the season, but would have been unable to continue the following year. Spennymoor United were unable to complete the season in the Unibond League. Following mis-management of the club, they were unable to pay players wages and complete their fixtures. They were eventually removed from the league and folded.

To their credit, the Spennymoor supporters refused to let the club die, and formed a supporters trust with the intentions of forming a club of their own. At the same time, a consortium led by Alan Murray was looking at a ground move from Evenwood to Spennymoor. Both made bids for the lease, then after a meeting at the Penny Gill in Spennymoor, the two sides came together and agreed to join forces for the good of the club. This allowed the consortium to forge ahead with its plans for the transfer.

On the 13th July, 2005 The Football Association finally granted permission for Evenwood Town AFC, a full member of the FA, to change it's name to Spennymoor Town FC, thereby securing Arngrove Northern League Division Two soccer at the Brewery Field. The name change was crucial for the club to obtain a lease for the ground. The legal entity, which traded as Evenwood Town AFC, will now trade as Spennymoor Town FC (it is not a new club), and it retains full membership of the FA, along with FA Charter Standard status.

Since initial negotiations in late April 2005, a tremendous amount of work had taken place, and an incredible amount had been achieved, with the agreement of Spennymoor Town Council to issue a lease for the Brewery Field, the organisation of the change of venue, and finally the securing of the change of name. Spennymoor Town FC and it's officials, had to thank the Town Council for their very considerable help and support over this period, enabling the club to be ready to compete in the ANL Northern League Division 2 for season 2005-06. They unequivocally demonstrated that they have always been committed to preserving non-league football in the town. With this vitally important piece of the jigsaw, the club could now concentrate on the real issue - playing matters.

The club had already notified the ANL of the proposed relocation to the Brewery Field, and a preliminary inspection took place on Friday 24th June, 2005. A follow up inspection has been arranged for Friday August 5th., 2005 with the season kicking off one week later with a home game at the Brewery Field , Friday August 12th against Darlington RA. A crowd of 511 saw The Moors win their first game 3-2. This was a great night, and the club and players would welcomed the great turnout from the 'Moors' renowned supporters. Substantive work had already taken place on the playing surface at the Brewery Field, and once full access to the ground was obtained,  improvements to the hard standing sections of the East and South terracing were started, along with revamping the South terrace toilet block, cleaning and decorating the changing and hospitality facilities, and providing lighting to the North turnstile block.

Their first season saw us finish in a respectable 6th position in the league. But if anyone at Spennymoor thought it would be a quiet summer, they were wrong. The off the field problems continued and resulted in Chairman Alan Murray taking full control of the club and the old committee resigning their positions. This led to the appointment of ex Middlesbrough man Jamie Pollock and Moors favourite Jason Ainsley as the new management team. They brought in a number of new faces to form a strong looking side with promotion their main aim for the 2006/07 season. In their first game in charge, they drew their home game with Washington 1-1 and on the 7th April they won the league with a 1-0 win away at Penrith.
